A must in Madonna di Campiglio: the tour of the 5 lakes

The tour of the 5 Lakes

Among the many excursions that the Dolomites offer, the Tour of the 5 Lakes with the starting point in Madonna di Campiglio, in the eastern sector of the Presanella Group, is perhaps the most spectacular. Although very tiring, it is one of the most popular in the whole of Trentino; but there is no doubt that a minimum of physical preparation is required to face the 6 hours that are required on average. The effort will be repaid in a big way with breathtaking views of the Brenta Dolomites among which you suddenly find yourself in landscapes worthy of Norway. As a starting point for the trek, depending on the level of physical preparation, there are at least two alternatives: go up to the Agostini refuge at an altitude of 2.082m with the Pradalago cable car from the center of Madonna di Campiglio, or on foot via path 265 passing through the lake of the Malghette.

The itinerary between the lakes

Arriving at the starting point you can already enjoy a wonderful view from above over the city, the first photos and you can start the tour! From here in just over an hour you reach the first wonder: Lake Serodoli at an altitude of 2371m. Along the left side of the lake, the effort will be considerably softened by the view over the Gelato Lake and the imposing Brenta Dolomites; further, ahead you will meet two completely different water mirrors: the Black Lake, so-called for its dark waters, and the Lambin Lake, on the contrary, characterized by crystalline water; a true spectacle of nature at an altitude of 2327m! From here we head, through a rocky and not very flowery path, to the highest point of the entire trek: Passo Ritorto at 2347m, from which we then descend to Lake Ritorto. I caught my breath and energy, and took the last snapshots, following the flat route 232 we reach the Pancugol refuge and from there descend to the village with the Cinque Laghi cable car.

Trekking in pills

In summary, the path described above can be traced back in a useful and not very romantic way to the total 16 km, to the 6 hours of walking, to the difference in height between 1520m and 2480 meters of the highest point. It is important to underline the need to leave with provisions as the itinerary is completely devoid of human settlements, not even the typical shelters are present; it is also this last peculiarity that makes the tour of the 5 Lakes unique and noble!
